Newsletter Coventry Judo Club November 2021
Welcome to the first newsletter since the club reopened in August.
Congratulations to Chelsie
Firstly, huge congratulations to Chelsie Giles, who won a very well deserved Olympic Medal at the Games in Tokyo, which was GB’s first medal of the 2021 Games. We are sure a lot of you will have followed her progress, and will know just how hard she has worked over the last few years to achieve this fantastic result.
Chelsie’s medal is the most recent in Coventry’s history – inspired by World Champion Neil Adams’s double Olympic success in Moscow and Los Angeles, and Sam Ingram’s Paralympic Medals in Beijing and London 2012. We are sure it won’t be the last!
A lot has changed since we had to close the club in March last year, just before the first lockdown. Our Head Coach for the last 14 years, Simon Moss, as Chelsie’s coach, played a major part in her Olympic achievement. It is no surprise that Simon has now been appointed to a more senior role at the BJA, as Olympic Development Coach Women. This will require extensive international travel, and he is no longer able to act as Head Coach, although he remains very much part of Coventry Judo Club. The Club is very proud of Chelsie and her coach, who has done so much for judo in Coventry, and we look forward to welcoming them both onto the mat when their busy schedules permit.
New Head Coach
The club is delighted that Anna Maria has agreed to accept the position as Head Coach at Coventry. She has worked closely with Simon for many years, and is looking forward to taking Coventry Judo Club into its next chapter. She is also to be congratulated for securing the role as Head Coach at Nottingham University Judo Club. She will continue to be assisted at Coventry by coaches, Shahroz, Scott, Phil, Chris and Bruce, who are thanked for their continued support.
We are very lucky that Josh and Yasmin, who are both training and studying full time, have been on the mat supporting our younger players, and that Ryan Wilkinson from Ryecroft has stepped in to coach on many occasions, sharing the benefit of his long and successful judo career (see picture of Simon and Ryan – not “Brian” – from their early judo days). We are also very much looking forward to welcoming back Amy and Connor, who will form part of our coaching team.
The club held its AGM in October, and the following were elected:
Chair: Adrian Holt, Treasurer: Ian Vowles, Secretary: Sara Hayes, Head Coach: Anna Maria Carbone. The club thanks the retiring committee members for their past service, and also thanks all the volunteers and members for the help they continue to provide to the club.
New venue from 7 December 2021
We are also very pleased to announce that we are moving to a new venue from Tuesday 7 December 2021. The club will be sad to leave Hereward, which has been our home for 10 years, but we are also excited about the new venue, which is based in a sports centre. Our new home will be:
Ryton On Dunsmore,
Coventry, CV8 3FL
Our last session at Hereward will be Friday 3 December and will be FREE. We hope to see as many friends there as possible, old and new, to say goodbye to the old venue, and look forward to the new one.
If anyone is free on Saturday 4 December, we will be at Hereward at 9.30am loading all the mats and other kit on to a van and unloading them at Ryton later. We would be very grateful for any volunteers who can spare some time to help with the move.
New session times/days
The new days are Tuesday and Thursday. We have tried to avoid making too many changes, and understand that this will be disappointing for our players who are not able to make the new classes. This change is something we have been unable to avoid, so we are hoping that as many as possible will be able to switch to one, or both, of the new nights. The new timetable is:
Tuesday: 6 – 7pm Junior Under 8s, 7 – 8pm Junior Over 8s, 8 – 9.30pm Seniors
Thursday: 6 – 7pm Junior Under 8s, 7 – 8pm Junior Over 8s, 8 – 9.30pm Seniors
Please note – the juniors, which had previously been combined, has been split out again into under 8s and over 8s. If you are unsure which class your junior should attend – speak to Anna Maria or one of the other coaches, and they can help you choose the best fit.
Thanks for bearing with us whilst we get things up and running in the new venue. We are hoping, in due course, to get back to running competitions etc, but for the moment we are concentrating on making a smooth transition to Ryton. We are also pleased to be setting up a new system to give everyone the option of paying their mat fees online. [more info about this/ links etc…]
As always, we are reliant on helpers to put the mats out, and to put them away at the end of the session, and will be glad to see as many people as possible. Our first session at Ryton will be Tuesday 7 December and this will be FREE. We would love to see you all there on this date, and start 2022 as we mean to go on!
Last session of 2021 – Tuesday 21 December – kids’ party on junior session
First session of 2022 – Thursday 6 January
